From my perspective, these are the books that I recommend, in the order that I recommend them: 1. Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, by Bruce N. Canfield, 1998 - This book frames up the M1 Carbine in a very organized, and quickly understandable fashion, and I still reference it frequently since I purchased it in 1999.

For what it is worth Ruth's Carbine owner's guide has an estimated or approximate manufacture date window of Oct-Dec 1943 for serial range 4075000- 4180000. Knows rear sights! I think it was a 4.43 serial that a local guy found having all early features. It being one of the 7000 additional serials NPM had asked for. The stock has been classified by collectors into 3 types:-. type 1 – early stocks with high wood and I-cut oiler recess. type 2 – mid war stock with high wood and oval oiler. type 3 – late stock with low wood and oval oiler.
