POGs were replaces with steel starting in 2000, so that won't be an issue. Once it has over 30-40k miles, it may need cam chain tensioner extenders, but that's an easy fix. Simply place one end of the voltmeter on the neg battery post the other at the starter housing, or fastener bolt. Hit the starter switch. The reading should be less than a volt. With pipes and air, you should be getting in the 35-42 mpg range. Poor mileage can be an indication of tuning issues.
