The range on these were 322,701-539,000, years 1895-1909. Like.The serial and model would be real useful - The serial is either on the bottom of the frame on the butt, or under the yoke. After 1957 S&W started stamping the model in that spot, too. So please open the cylinder and look on the crane, there could be both the model (Mod 10-3, for instance) and a serial number.Have a Model 60 round butt, no-pin 1 7/8" barrel, hammer-mounted firing pin, with a paper "E" sticker on the right grip, and another sticker on the frame under the left grip "27." Serial number is 314xx on the left side of the frame hidden by the grip, but the visible number on the butt is AND598x. All Smith & Wesson revolvers have the serial number stamped on the bottom or the front of the grip. This is the most authoritative place to check the revolver’s serial number. Most S&W pistols have the serial number stamped on the left side of the frame.

I have been unable to determine the date of manufacture, I tried the Smith and Wesson Standard Catalog but I didn’t see a way there to match the serial number with a date. I believe this handgun was manufactured from about 1895 until 1941.

On some models they would also put the serial number on the frame, cylinder, and sometimes on the grips, but varied by model. Sometimes there was really no rhyme nor reason to what S&W did/does.

The grips are definitely 1920's versions and if the SN inside the right panel matches, the gun shipped between 1928 and 1930. The .38 M&P with a 4" barrel was the military revolver of WWII, AKA the Victory model. It was identical to your GF's gun except for barrel length and finish.
