A buddy of mine is running the Serpent's Skull adventure in Pathfinder 2e and was in need of one more player. Intrigued by the idea of trying out a new class, I decided to roll up a Thaumaturge. However, diving into a new class and system after such a long break has left me feeling a bit overwhelmed.

However, in exchange for this exceptional martial capability ...

half elf human can easily get fighter or investigator archetype at level 9. very good for thaumaturge. Champion and Sentinel are almost always going to be the strongest combat-oriented archetypes for a Str Thaum. Imo, there are few archetypes worth taking 100% of, so I encourage you to not limit yourself in such a way with your FA slots. It doesn't make foxfire itself BETTER, but there is a very specific circumstance where a ranged natural weapon is quite useful. If you look up the dark archives playtest of the thaumaturge, you'll note that their damage feature applies to ranged weapons and also that they need to use one hand to manipulate implements.Yeah, the best moves I've been able to find are Wand and Weapon Implement with a passive for the third as needed. Turn one is Exploit>Strike>Cursed Effigy. Subsequent turns are Lightning Wand and a Thrown weapon. You could also take a Repeating gun and try to fish for the crit specialization as that also procs the Cursed Effigy debuff.

The Thaumaturge's benefits from Exploit Vulnerability and Implement's Empowerment do not apply to Strikes from Animal Companions (at least not until level 10 or 20 with Share Weakness or Ubiquitous Weakness). If you do want an Animal Companion, you may be better off taking a mount (with either the Beastmaster or Cavalier archetype).

All this, at level 1! By PF2E standards, the ability to get feats without spending feat points is strong. The ability to do multiple actions for less, is strong. The initial benefit of Mirror implement, is strong. The Thaumaturge is a shocking design because of how much it gives you at level 1. At a quick review of Thaumaturge, that does appear to be the case. Personally, I think you'd get a lot more out of Alchemist than Thaumaturge for your second class. There's a lot more direct synergy, and the alchemist class abilities not granted through the dedication are very strong, especially with Devise. The point is: Cavalier at Level 2. Phalanx Piercer can be used mounted, and the extra action economy lets you do other actions you couldn't normally do (like move and Intimidate) readily despite reload 1. The interaction is that Scroll Thaumaturge makes the Trick Item parts of Scroll Trickster entirely unnecessary. You don't need to Trick the scrolls, you can just use them. That being said, the feats that give you free scrolls on daily prep can expand your spell repertoire alongside the Thaumatuge feats of similar design.

For a thaumaturge, dipping into rogue is great anyways because surprise attack from the dedication, L4 for quick draw, L6 for sneak attack, and L8 for dread striker gives you great synergy (demoralize the enemy with your +1/+2 bonus from regalia to make them flatfooted, frightened, and deal 1D6 extra damage). The Norse God of Knowledge and Wisdom, Mimir served as an advisor of Odin, until he was accused by the Allfather of aiding the giants. Thaumaturge weapon options seem too narrow. 2 people marked this as a favorite. The weapon implement requires an actual …

The Wand does damage with a save, meaning it doesn’t add to the multiple attack penalty. It pairs best with a Strike in the same turn. I think a repeating hand crossbow build to get the one handed bonus damage is an intriguing ranged build or even multiclassing into Gunslinger and using a gun in the other hand with bonus one-handed weapon damage.

Use your implement. Move into flanking. Strike with MAP if the enemy's already vulnerable. This is great for Thresh, who wants to take many dedications to fit his theme. And speaking of theme, Thresh begins with the Lantern Implement. Dedication if pursued to the end gives you 1 or 2 spell slots of each level at a few levels behind pace, which works better for buff/utility spells than spell attacks and save or suck.
