Hitting rocks, barricades, bubbles, and purple mushrooms from the top will not damage you. Sometimes it's better to jump over a slippery slope instead of riding down it, so you don't gain too much speed. The added speed can help, but it can also kill you if you're not used to it. If you really don't like the game just don't play it.
