It was clear that he'd been doing this for a long time. Zenni is garbage. You get what you pay for. That being said, scratch resistant is not scratch-proof. Polycarbonate scratches easily. Costco has high quality coatings that do a pretty good job in this department, but if you drop them in the gravel, they are going to scratch. Also, it does matter what you clean them with.
