Jake brake not working on high.

Posted June 9, 2010. The engine brake solenoids are located under the valve covers. They sometimes quit working properly. Did this just crop up or have they been acting erratically since new? There is an update kit available through Mack Partswhich corrects some weak brake and other problems associated with your model Jake Brake.The switch on the dash selects between high (all 6 cylinders) or low (only 3 cylinders). The foot switch actually activates the Jake engine brake on and off, as long as no throttle input is registered. On my 02 Exec the switch to left of driver is for 2 stage Jake, lo-hi not on/off. All it was was the spring on the clutch pedal. The pedal wouldn't fully release and this caused cruise and jake to not work.

Jakes are different than exhaust brakes. A Jake hold the exhaust valves closed and an exhaust brake acts like a flapper in a pipe. It simply holds back the pressure that the exhaust is making. Jakes are more efficient and cost more but, you get what you pay for. If the exhaust is muffled the noise of the Jake is hardly noticeable.My Jake brakes were working good then they suddenly got week. If it is working right, low (one Jake) will give you the Cummins death rattle just before it disengages as you come to a stop. High (both Jakes) does not produce the death rattle before it disengages. High has a more aggressive braking action especially at highway speed.
