I would recommend staying downtown myself. You can walk around and just look at building that way, I found a lot of beautiful things by wandering. Some friends and I are planning a trip to Charleston in SC in early Oct and we're considering a Plantation Tour. I came across one called "Plantation Extravaganza!" It is not a place where gay people would have to worry about their safety any more than heterosexuals. People generally have a live and let live attitude. Having said that, Charleston offers very little in terms of gay culture.Mt. Pleasant is a nice area. Personally, I would recommend venturing ~5-10 minutes further from downtown and staying in one of the beaches. Folly Beach or Sullivans Island being the closest. March is before the high season so prices should be decent, not sure how they compare to Mt. P.
