Dennis Corporation is providing professional engineering services to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for the replacement of a bridge over Hurricane Creek located in the Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve in Darlington County. This highway construction would destroy wetlands and critical wildlife habitat, impact the health of the river, and exacerbate flooding for disadvantaged communities already challenged with property damage and displacement.
Today a small greenspace called Riverside Park surrounds Laney Landing, complete with a picnic shelter. The Tanyard Loop of the Great Pee Dee Nature Trail offers a paved walking path to enjoy strolling along the river’s bank. The park and landing allow visitors a full day on the river or just an afternoon of appreciating its scenic surroundings.
The Pee Dee and South Carolina lost one of our greatest conservation leaders in August with the passing of Kenny Segars. Kenny was a lifelong Hartsville resident and graduated Clemson with a degree in Resource Management. He was instrumental in creating the 796-acre Segars-McKinnon Heritage Preserve adjacent to Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville.
