Tested all the relays in the fuse/relay box and all tested good. Tested the external relay from the TIPM recall and is good. The marks on the new stick do not line up with the marks on my old one - (ie: I have been running with 5 quarts, the new stick appears it wants to be 6 quarts...) The problem is you let yourself get talked into crossover steering which pretty much always causes steering issues on a TJ. After being removed by myself and countless PO's over the years, it's got all kinds of little bends and as such, and won't hold oil in. Problem is, I can't find one that says it will actually fit a 76 CJ5 w/ a 258. Most of the say they are for an 81-86 AMC 258.Personally I believe the 42re is a reliable transmission. It doesn't really seem to have any common issues, maybe bad solenoids. Mine has 231,000, seems fine. Use the correct fluid, keep them cool, use O/D off when towing anything. Enjoy.
