A friend of mine has a Holley 3997788 6238-1. The numbers show it's a 1972 Z/28 with auto trans carb. The date code is a four digit code (1354) so it's a replacement carb from what I've researched and the "4" is the year of manufacture.

I managed to obtain a copy of a page of the original engineering data sheet from Holley dated November 17, 1964. They were released to manufacturing December 2. Original, S1MS three digit date code carbs like yours are quite rare. It seems there were some date codes produced in greater numbers than others.
